Week 5 Story: Rama vs Ravana

Author's Note: This week I wanted to re-tell the battle between Rama and Ravana because of how epic the Sister Nivedita version made it seem. I decided to make all the characters lions because a battle this great had to be between equally as awesome animals, and to me almost nothing are cooler than lions.

Bibliography: Myths of the Hindus and Buddhists: Ramayana by Sister Nivedita. 1914.

Both the lions leered at each other with unmasked hatred. Rama with his glorious golden mane shining in the sun. Ravana's dark mane seemed to absorb all the light around him, casting a terrifying aura around his gigantic body. Both Rama's and Ravana's pack surrounded them watching intently, seeing who would make the first move and who would be the victor and win the beautiful Sita.

Suddenly, Ravana let out a loud roar that echoed throughout the plain. Soon, his pack took up the call and it sounded like thunder itself was against Rama. However, he was unfazed by the spectacle and just cocked his head still staring at Ravana. This obviously displeased Ravana as he immediately started to charge at Rama at full pelt. Rama reciprocated and also sprinted to the battle. They clashed in the middle, their full weights on each other, the claws digging into the other's side. Rama quickly darted to the side using his agility to claw at one of Ravana's heads blinding and incapacitating it. But Ravana would not let that go unanswered and he quickly pounced on Rama pinning him to the ground. The two heads Ravana had left were growling and biting at Rama, but with one big heave Rama had enough room to slip off and incapacitate the other head. Ravana replied with a big swipe that raked up the flank of Rama caused blood to gush out.

Rama knew he had to end this quick before Ravana charged him. With a loud roar Rama charged at Ravana not letting him catch his breath. He quickly jumped over Ravana's open jaw and jumped on his back pinning him to the ground. Rama grabbed Ravana's neck in his powerful jaws ending the battle in one swift action. Rama let out an tremendous roar that could be heard across the country and everyone knew that Ravana the demon had finally been vanquished.

  1. Rohit,

You did a really good job with your story this week. I like how you decided to transform both Rama and Ravana to become lions instead of humans. The metaphor of having the two most powerful people in the epic become one of the strongest animals in the kingdom is great. Why do you think that lions are some of the coolest animals? Was there any other animal that you thought what have fit the characters if you didn't choose lions? I know in the epic that Rama defeated Ravana due to the gods giving him things such as a chariot and bow and arrow. Is there any way you would be able to put that into this story as well? Good job!

  2. the visual imagery in the post is immaculate. I loved your usage of light imagery, and describing how it reflected from the mane is really cool. I think changing the protagonist and antagonist to lions actually fits very well, since both men represent the top of the hierarchy of their sides. Lions represent power and dominance to me. This was a cool battle scene to read, and I don't think it really needed anything more. Good job!
